Garmin Forerunner 745

Garmin Forerunner 745 - Multi Sport GPS Smartwatch
Is Garmin's new Forerunner 745 a paired-down 945, or is it a distinctly separate and relevant multi-sport option? Is this a case of reduced features or increased relevance? Is your choice based on your end goal, or your ongoing training?
Don't make the mistake of thinking that the new Garmin Forerunner 745 is just a Forerunner 945 'lite.' To do so is to under-rate it and miss out on its primary difference to the 945 - it's look, feel and distinctive focus. Garmin have chosen to offset the 745's feature payload in recognition of the continuing demand for a high performance watch that is lighter and sleeker, without compromising their current styling. A replacement for its predecessor the 735XT, it now has the higher resolution screen of the 945 - 240 x 240 pixels compared to the 215 x 180 of the 735XT - a smart move on Garmin's part. Alongside the increase in smart features over the 735XT, the 745 has established itself as a distinctive niche between the other two.
Offsetting the lack of maps, and the reduced battery life and song storage, is the increased appeal to those with either smaller wrists, or the desire to reduce the size and bulk of the 745, while still taking advantage of its screen. Both watches are intended for the multi-discipline athlete, with the 745 catering more for training than for competition. Offering guidance through data and analysis, the 745 suggests daily workouts based on your previous performance alongside your current training schedule.
With multi-satellite system support, Forerunner 745 can track your runs, rides and swims with better accuracy than ever.

Ultimately the 745 is aimed at the workout rather than the event, the discipline of a training programme rather than the endurance of a competition. It is intended to compliment the 945 rather than compete with it, with each offering an advantage over the other while still maintaining the core features common to both - the large high resolution screen, the sensors and the ruggedness of their construction. The 745 offers better training analysis at a lower price while the 945 provides a well featured platform - at a higher price. In the end it comes down to preference, but given that the 745 is still very capable on the day as a high-end triathlon watch, it may well be that the time and discipline of the training regime outweighs any extra features the 945 may offer for the actual event. The longer-term requirements of the daily commitment could easily outweighing those of the intensity and endurance of the specific event. The Garmin Forerunner 745 should be considered as a distinct addition to your training programme.
